dental crownsChances are pretty good that you’ll get a cavity at some point during your lifetime. Even if you brush regularly, floss daily and use mouthwash, you’ll likely join the 90 percent of Americans who get at least one. But how do you know when you have a cavity?

A visit to the dentist will let you know for sure, but there are actually a few warning signs that can tip you off. If you do end up having a cavity, catching it early in the process will help prevent further damage and more costly dental procedures down the road.

Warning Sign 1: Sensitivity

Does it feel like one or a few teeth are sensitive to temperature? If you suddenly have sensitivity to things like hot soups or ice cream, it may be a sign that you have a cavity. Similarly, sugary foods that cause sensitivity – such as tingling or mild pain – may indicate you have a cavity. If you can pinpoint the exact tooth that is sensitive, it’s an even better indicator.

Warning Sign 2: Abnormal Spots

If your teeth have abnormally light or dark spots, it’s a good sign that your enamel is weakening because of a cavity. These spots can be black, brown, gray or even white, and usually stay the same color even if you whiten your teeth. If your entire tooth is a different color, you should definitely see a dentist.

Warning Sign 3: Pain

Toothaches are one of the most common warning signs for a cavity. Whether you experience pain all the time or only when you chew, something is likely wrong. If you avoid seeing a dentist for pain or a toothache, it can result in further decay or damage to your teeth.

Warning Sign 4: Bad Breath

Many cavities can hide food particles or bacteria, causing bad breath. Although it’s not a common warning sign for a cavity, if you suddenly start to notice an odor from your mouth that you can’t get rid of, it’s time to see the dentist.

Warning Sign 5: Bleeding

When your gums bleed during flossing, it’s usually a sign for gingivitis. Your teeth are the same way, as bleeding during brushing can indicate the presence of a cavity.
